Many Android phones store a few seconds of movement with a photo – as a motion photo. Then there are animated GIFs, WebPs and APNGs. On upload this movement is often lost, because only the still image is kept.

Photogala recognises these files automatically and keeps the movement. In the gallery a badge shows which photos move; in the full view the movement plays. The still image stays in full resolution.

It is more than a gimmick. In group shots especially, the moment just after the click is often the honest one: when the pose drops and everybody starts laughing.

Motion picture questions

1Do guests have to change a setting?
No. If their Android phone records Motion Photos, the motion is detected automatically on upload. The same goes for animated GIF, WebP and APNG files.
2Does this also work with Live Photos from an iPhone?
Only as a still. When uploading through the browser, the iPhone hands over just the photo; the motion stays on the device. To show it, export the Live Photo as a video first and upload it as a video.
3Can other people see the movement?
Yes. When someone opens the photo in full view, the motion plays — whatever device they use.
4Is the normal photo still there?
Yes, at full resolution. The movement is added on top.
5Is there sound?
Yes, if the recording has sound. It is kept and follows the mute setting in the player.
6Does it count double against my storage?
No. A motion photo counts as one photo in your photo allowance, not as a video.
7Can I turn the movement off?
There is no separate setting for it. In the gallery the photo appears as a still; the motion only starts when someone opens it.
8Are motion pictures part of the download?
Yes. The download is the original file, which contains the motion.
