Quiz
The Quiz tool turns your event into a game show: the questions appear big on the photo wall or the projector, and your guests answer on their phones. You host the live show yourself – or you publish a quiz to play anytime, and everyone guesses along on their own phone whenever they like.
Live show or anytime?
Section titled “Live show or anytime?”In each quiz’s settings, How it’s played offers three options:
- Live show – you host, the questions run on the screen, and everyone answers on their phone at the same time. Every new quiz starts out like this.
- Anytime – no screen needed: guests play on their phones whenever they like, each on their own and without a timer.
- Live and anytime – as a show on the screen and to play later on phones. The two leaderboards stay separate.
Setting it up
Section titled “Setting it up”-
Open Tooling → Quiz and switch on Enable tool at the top. You can write and rehearse quizzes before that – but the real live show only starts once the tool is enabled.
-
In the Content tab, tap New quiz, enter the Title on screen and add your questions with Add question in the Questions tab. Then press Save – nothing is saved automatically.
-
In the quiz’s Settings tab, choose under How it’s played how it should run. If it should be playable anytime, also switch on Publish for guests further down.
-
In the Display tab, switch on Widget on the home page – unlike Entry in the guest menu, it starts out off. With the widget on, the Widget style appears below it.
The widget on the home page
Section titled “The widget on the home page”The widget only shows something when there is something to play or see right now – otherwise it stays hidden, even with the switch on:
- During a live show it shows Live now with the quiz title, “The questions are on the screen — play along on your phone.” and a Play along button. Guests who are already playing get back to their answers via Back to the quiz. If all spots are taken, the button is missing: “All spots are taken — you can still guess along on the screen.”
- When an anytime quiz is open, the card is called Quiz – with the title or, if there are several, something like “3 quizzes to play” – and a Play now or Keep playing button.
- During the award ceremony and for a few hours afterwards, the card reads Award ceremony or Quiz over – with “Who won? Here are the results.” and See results.
Rehearsals never show up in the widget.
As long as the switch is on, the Widget style block sits below it with five cards: Classic (the default), Elegant, Minimal, Bold and Soft. Turn the widget off and the block disappears.
The entry in the guest menu
Section titled “The entry in the guest menu”Entry in the guest menu is switched on from the start and puts Quiz into the Event info & tools rail on the event home page – no matter whether the widget is on. The entry leads to the quiz page with the subtitle Play along and earn points. That’s where the live show and all open anytime quizzes come together – if there’s only one to play, your guests land right in it. Order and labels of the rail are set in the Guest menu.
Your quizzes
Section titled “Your quizzes”The Content tab holds the Live show card – this is where you run the show from – and the Your quizzes list. An event holds up to 20 quizzes with up to 50 questions each, on every plan. Below the heading you see how many you have created – for example “3 of 20 quizzes created” – and the line “Up to 75 guests can play per quiz round — that’s what your plan includes.”
Every quiz offers Edit, Results, Move up and Move down, Duplicate and Delete:
- Duplicate puts the copy at the end of the list. The copy isn’t published for guests yet.
- Delete asks Delete quiz? first. The quiz is permanently deleted along with its questions and results, and gallery points guests won with it are deducted again.
- While a quiz is running as a live show, you can only delete it afterwards. Editing still works – the show plays the quiz as it was when the lobby opened, and saved changes apply from the next show.
The header of the quiz editor shows chips with the number of questions, the approximate duration (approx. 8 min) and the status: Ready to go or Not ready yet, and for anytime quizzes also Published for guests or Not published yet. As soon as you change something, the Unsaved changes bar appears at the bottom with Discard and Save. If a detail is still missing, the bar says how many, and Show jumps right to it. Saving works without questions too – but a quiz can only be started with at least one.
Adding questions
Section titled “Adding questions”In the Questions tab, Add question creates up to 50 questions. Under Question type you can mix four kinds however you like:
- Multiple choice – two to four answers, exactly one of them correct. Tap the check mark next to the correct answer.
- True/false – two big tiles. Under Which is correct? you set the right one.
- Estimate question – guests set a slider on their phones. You enter Lowest value, Highest value and Correct answer, plus an optional Unit such as km or years and the Step size – without one, Photogala picks it automatically.
- Poll – no right answer and no points. The screen shows how people voted.
On a new multiple choice or true/false question, the first answer starts out marked as correct – check the check mark before you save.
For every question you also set:
- Image (optional) – appears large on the screen and small above the question on phones. Landscape works best, at least 1200 px wide. It’s uploaded when you save.
- Time to answer – without a value of its own, Quiz default applies, i.e. the answer time from the settings.
- Points – Standard earns up to 1,000 points for a correct answer, Double twice that (e.g. for the last question), and No points doesn’t count and doesn’t break a streak – good for warming up.
- Reveal note – appears on the screen and on phones as soon as the correct answer is shown, for example a little story behind the answer.
The Preview shows how the question looks on the screen and on phones. Duplicate copies a question, Remove takes it out – it’s only gone for good with the next Save.
The settings
Section titled “The settings”General
Section titled “General”- Introduction – shown on the screen and on phones before the start, for example “Ten questions about the couple – get your phones ready!”.
- How it’s played – Live show, Anytime or Live and anytime.
Time and points
Section titled “Time and points”- Answer time per question – applies to every question without its own time, from 5 to 120 seconds, 20 by default. Before each question, a 3-second countdown runs on the screen.
- How much does speed count? – from Not at all to A lot, 50% by default. Correct answers that come later earn fewer points. The line below does the math, at 50%: “Correct right away: 1,000 · halfway: 750 · at the last second: 500”. At 0%, every correct answer earns 1,000 points.
These rules apply on top:
- Streak bonus: from the second correct answer in a row, you get 100 extra points, 100 more with each one after that, up to 400. A wrong or missing answer ends the streak. Double doubles the points for the answer, not the bonus.
- Estimate questions: only how close the guess is counts, not the time. The exact value earns full points; from a quarter of the scale away, there’s nothing left. Up to an eighth of the scale away, the estimate counts as correct – for the streak too. The question itself shows what that means for your values.
- Polls and questions set to “No points” earn no points and don’t break a streak.
- Anytime play has no timer: every correct answer counts in full. This leaderboard is separate from the live show.
- Gallery points: if points are switched on for your event, every 100 quiz points earn 1 point on the gallery leaderboard. Rehearsals and aborted shows don’t count. Points settings leads to the points configuration.
Show mood
Section titled “Show mood”For live shows only. The mood sets the sounds and effects on the screen:
- Automatic (the default) – calm for weddings, conferences and workshops, lively otherwise. Below it you see what applies to your event.
- Calm – soft gong, subtle motion.
- Lively – ticking, short chimes, streamers.
- Wild – all sounds, confetti, hard cuts. It only gets wild if you choose it.
The quiz takes its colors and font from your event. The answer tiles have fixed colors and shapes so everyone can match them between the screen and their phone. To change the colors themselves, use Change colors – more on that in Customizing the look.
Table ranking
Section titled “Table ranking”For live shows only. With Let tables compete against each other, the tables from your seating plan compete on top of the individual ranking:
- Seating plan – without a choice, the first visible seating plan with tables counts. A hidden seating plan only counts if you pick it here explicitly.
- Scores are averaged per person, so big tables have no advantage. A table counts once it has 2 players.
- Guests who scanned their place card with its personal QR link sit at their table from the seating plan automatically. Everyone else picks their table when they join. It’s locked after their first answer.
- Anyone without a table still plays – just on their own.
- The table leaderboard only appears if at least half of all players sit at counted tables and at least 2 tables are counted. Otherwise the screen skips it.
- The show locks in the tables when you open the lobby. Later changes to the seating plan only apply to the next show.
Without a seating plan with tables, the section shows No seating plan with tables yet and Open seating plan – without tables, everyone plays on their own.
Play anytime
Section titled “Play anytime”Only for quizzes set to Anytime or Live and anytime. Guests play on their own phones, each quiz once, with no host and no timer – anyone who stops halfway picks up later where they left off.
- Publish for guests – only then can guests see the quiz. As a moderator, you can see it before that on the quiz page, marked Not published. Open it with Preview and play it through with Test play – it doesn’t count, nothing is saved, and guests won’t notice a thing. Test play works as long as the quiz isn’t open to guests yet.
- Opens on and Closes on – an optional time window in your device’s time zone. Leave them empty to open the quiz as soon as it’s published and keep it open. Before it opens, guests can’t see the quiz yet; after it closes, they see their result but can no longer play.
- Reveal – After each question (the default) shows right away whether an answer was correct. Only at the end only tells them after the last question – that way, nobody can pass on answers.
- Feature on the photo wall (on by default) – while the quiz is open, the photo wall shows it for 30 seconds about every 10 minutes: with a QR code to play along, the top three so far and how many guests have already joined. During a live show, it waits.
Hosting the live show
Section titled “Hosting the live show”Starting a show or a rehearsal
Section titled “Starting a show or a rehearsal”In the Content tab, tap Open live show on the Live show card. Under Which quiz? you pick the quiz. Every quiz with at least one question that is set to Live show or Live and anytime can be started – for all others, Not ready yet explains what’s missing.
Or straight from the gallery: on the quiz page, admins get the section For you as an admin. Start live show brings you here with the quiz already selected.
- Start rehearsal – only moderators can see and play the rehearsal. It doesn’t count, awards no points, and guests won’t notice a thing – the photo wall doesn’t show it either. It even works while the tool is still switched off.
- Open lobby – starts the real show. As soon as the lobby is open, all guests who have the gallery open get a prompt to play along.
Only one show or rehearsal can run at a time. The show takes the questions as they are when the lobby opens.
The screen
Section titled “The screen”- With a photo wall: open the photo wall on the laptop connected to the projector – Open photo wall in the live show view takes you there. As soon as the lobby is open, it shows the show with the QR code to play along, and afterwards the photos again.
- Without a photo wall: open the live show view itself on the laptop connected to the projector. During the show it holds the Screen preview – Fullscreen turns it into the screen. That’s also how you try out a rehearsal on the projector.
No projector? Set the quiz to Anytime, and guests play on their phones whenever they like.
Getting guests in
Section titled “Getting guests in”Guests scan the QR code on the screen or tap Play along in the gallery – they don’t need a code. While the show runs, a card Live show · starting soon or Live show on now with a Play along button sits at the bottom of the gallery. Depending on the page, the prompt A quiz is about to start briefly appears instead when the lobby opens.
On their phones, guests without a name pick one first – it appears on the screen during the quiz and applies to the whole gallery. With table ranking on, they pick their table next. Anyone who joins during the show plays along from the next question.
Running the show
Section titled “Running the show”You run the show from the laptop or your phone – on the laptop also with the right arrow key or a presenter. The big button leads you through the show:
- Start quiz – after the countdown, the first question appears and the answer time runs.
- Reveal – shows the correct answer. If not everyone has answered yet, it turns into Reveal anyway, and you press again. Once time is up or everyone has answered, the reveal comes on its own.
- Show standings – the current leaderboard. After polls and questions set to No points there are no standings, and it moves straight on.
- Next question – until the last question.
- On to the award ceremony – after the reveal of the last question, it goes straight to the podium.
- End show – wraps up the show, and the points go onto the gallery leaderboard. In a rehearsal, the button is called End rehearsal.
The view also shows what’s coming up, e.g. “Up next · Question 4 · Estimate question”, along with the Correct answer — only visible to you and how many have answered correctly so far.
Under Players you see everyone who is playing. Not answered filters for those who haven’t answered the current question yet. The icon next to a name – in the lobby also a click on the name in the screen preview – removes someone: they’re out of this show, can’t rejoin, and their points so far no longer count. Their spot opens up again.
Ending the show early
Section titled “Ending the show early”- Close lobby – as long as the show hasn’t started. You can open a new lobby at any time afterwards.
- End show – once the last question has been revealed. The award ceremony is skipped, but the show still counts as played.
- Abort show – in the middle of the show. It ends immediately and counts as aborted, with no gallery points. The results up to that point are still under Results.
After the end, View results and Set up a new show take you further.
Spots per quiz round
Section titled “Spots per quiz round”How many guests can play depends on the guest allowance of your plan: Starter 20, Plus 75, Premium 250, Deluxe unlimited.
- In a live show, joining takes a spot. Anyone who reloads the page and rejoins doesn’t need a second one. If you remove someone, their spot opens up.
- In an anytime quiz, everyone who plays it counts together – the spot is taken when a guest taps Start quiz. If you reset the results, the spots open up again.
- The live show view shows how many spots are taken, e.g. “48 of 75 spots taken”. From 80%, the notice “15 spots left — your plan lets 75 guests play per quiz round.” appears, and when it’s full, “All 75 spots are taken” with See plans with more spots.
- Anyone who still tries to join when it’s full sees All spots are taken on their phone. Everyone can still see the questions on the screen.
If your event still has the unlimited allowance from before, there’s no limit and no spot count. What each plan includes is covered in Plan & term.
Results
Section titled “Results”You reach the Results tab in the quiz editor or via Results in the quiz list. At the top are the Rounds: every Live show, every Rehearsal, aborted shows marked Aborted, and all anytime play together as Played anytime. For each round you see:
- key figures such as Players, Correct on average and Best streak,
- the Leaderboard with rank, name, table, points, correct answers and best streak,
- the Table ranking – or No table ranking this time,
- the Question recap.
While the show is still running, the view is called Standings and the numbers keep changing. Refresh fetches the latest state.
You can delete a live show or rehearsal round: its leaderboard and answers are permanently deleted, and gallery points from it are deducted again. Anytime results are cleared with Reset – all results from the gallery are deleted, and guests can play the quiz again. There is no export.
Multiple languages
Section titled “Multiple languages”If your event is multilingual, the language bar sits in the header of the quiz editor. Update All or Fill Missing translate the title, questions and answers, plus – if filled in – the introduction, unit and reveal note. If the editor reports that the translation no longer matches the texts, the quiz has changed in the meantime – just start it again. How the language bar works is covered in General settings.
What your guests see
Section titled “What your guests see”Guests reach the quiz page via the entry in the guest menu or the direct link. Most events have just one quiz, and the page is built for that:
- Exactly one quiz to play – the live show that’s on, or an open anytime quiz: it opens right away.
- Nothing to play yet: the page says No quiz running yet and waits. As soon as the live show starts or an anytime quiz opens, it starts by itself. If a quiz opens later, the page shows when.
- Several quizzes: guests see the overview. While a show runs, Live show on now with Play along sits at the top. Below, Play anytime lists the open quizzes with Play now, Keep playing or See results.
After the show, guests see their result there.
If you’re an admin, nothing opens by itself on the quiz page. You also get the section For you as an admin there – guests don’t see it. It tells you what guests get on the page right now and offers what’s still missing: Start live show, Publish, Add questions, Create quiz, or Turn on while the tool is off. While the show runs, Go to live show takes you to hosting, and Manage quizzes opens Tooling → Quiz.
During the show, the phone shows the question and the answer tiles in the same colors and shapes as the screen, and for estimate questions a slider with Submit estimate. At the end, everyone sees their rank, their points and – with table ranking – their table’s rank.
For anytime play, a guest starts with Start quiz. Every answer counts, each quiz can be played once, and anyone who stops halfway finds their progress again later. At the end they see Your result and their rank on the quiz leaderboard.
Practical tip for the night
Section titled “Practical tip for the night”- Rehearse first. Play the quiz once as a rehearsal, ideally on the projector it will run on later. Your guests won’t notice a thing. Try an anytime quiz with Test play before you publish it.
- Leave the lobby open for a few minutes. That gives everyone time to scan the QR code. Anyone who arrives later joins from the next question.
- Warm up with a poll. A poll or a question set to No points at the start shows everyone how it works without costing anyone their streak.
- Make the last question double. Double on the last question keeps the suspense up until the very end.
- Plan a winners’ photo. The podium says “Winners’ photo! Winners, please come to the front.” – a good moment for a prize. How to crown winners in the gallery is covered in Crowning winners & handing out prizes.
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”- “The quiz is turned off for guests — turn it on to start the live show.” Switch on Enable tool at the top, or tap Turn on on the quiz page in the gallery. Only the rehearsal works without it.
- A quiz can’t be started. It has no questions yet or is set to Anytime only. Choose Live show or Live and anytime in the settings.
- “A show is already running”. Only one show or rehearsal can run at a time – maybe it was started on another device. It will show up in the live show view shortly, where you can continue or end it. A forgotten show ends on its own after 12 hours.
- The photo wall doesn’t show the rehearsal. That’s intentional. To try it out on the projector, use the Screen preview in Fullscreen.
- The button says Finish counting instead of Show standings. The answers to this question haven’t been fully counted yet. Press the button – if it says “The answers are still being counted.”, try again in a moment.
- Guests see “All spots are taken”. Your plan’s guest allowance is used up for this round. Remove players who are no longer around, or choose a plan with more spots.
- A guest can’t rejoin. If they were removed, they stay out of this show – they can play again in the next one.
- The table ranking is missing. When the lobby opened there was no seating plan with tables (notice Table ranking without tables), too few players sat at counted tables, or fewer than 2 tables were counted.
- Edited questions don’t show up in the running show. The show plays the quiz as it was when the lobby opened. Your changes apply from the next show.
- An anytime quiz doesn’t show up for guests. Check Publish for guests and the Opens on and Closes on window, plus Enable tool at the very top and, in the Display tab, the Widget on the home page and Entry in the guest menu switches. The quickest check is the quiz page in the gallery: the section For you as an admin shows what guests get there right now and what’s still missing.
- Guests land right in the quiz instead of the overview. That’s intentional as long as there’s exactly one quiz to play. With several open, they see the overview and choose.
- No gallery points arrive. Gallery points only exist with points switched on, see Turning features on & off. Rehearsals and aborted shows never count.
