Likes & comments

Show others which photos you love – and start a conversation through comments. There’s more than one way to do both, and this guide covers them all: the heart on the tile, the double-tap in fullscreen, the tile’s context menu, the bulk like for a whole selection, the emoji bar when commenting, replies and @ mentions.

The gallery shows every contribution from the event as a grid. This is where you like and comment. ① the progress card – it only shows when photo tasks are switched on and tasks exist, ② the toolbar with Filter, Upload, Select, Photowall, Map, Deleted and the column picker – on a phone only Filter and the upload button stay, the rest moves into the three-dot menu next to them, ③ the Sort by bar with Upload, Capture, Likes and Comments; the control on the far right reverses the direction.

The host has to enable these

Likes and comments are two separate features. Likes are OFF by default and must be enabled by the host (Admin area → Settings → Features). Comments are ON by default. If the heart or the speech bubble is missing entirely, the feature isn’t turned on for this event. See Settings → Features.

Who can do what?

• Liking is open to everyone, as long as the feature is on – including view-only guests.
• Reading comments is also open to everyone.
• Writing comments requires the contributor role or higher. View-only guests see the comment list but, instead of the input box, the note “Only contributors can comment”. More under Roles & permissions.

Likes – every way

There are five ways to like a photo. Three of them (heart icon, context menu and bulk like) work right from the grid; the other two work inside the opened photo.

Double-tap only likes in fullscreen

A common misconception: double-tap to like works only in the slideshow (fullscreen view), NOT in the gallery grid. Tapping a tile in the grid simply opens the photo. To like from the grid, use the heart icon or the tile’s context menu.

Way 1: Heart icon on the tile

1. Hover over a tile (on a phone the heart is always visible). The heart icon sits in the top-right corner of the tile.

2. Tap the heart – it fills in and a small heart animation (confetti burst) plays. Tapping again removes the like.

3. Once a photo has at least one like, a small number (the like counter) appears next to the heart.

Heart not showing?

The heart on the tile only appears when the host has enabled liking and kept the tile icons visible. If the heart is hidden on the tiles, you can still like from the opened photo (see below).

Way 2: The tile’s context menu

You can reach a tile’s context menu on every device – only the gesture differs.

1. On a computer: right-click a tile.

2. On a phone or tablet: press and hold the tile (long-press). Keep your finger still on the image for about half a second – then the very same menu opens right where you pressed.

   

   Right-click on a computer and long-press on a phone open the same menu. ① Select and Open, ② Like, Comments, Share and Download – Share only appears when sharing is switched on for the event, Download only when single downloads are allowed, ③ Edit and Delete – on your own photos, on other people’s only with moderation rights, ④ Unpublish – only with moderation rights; on a photo that is not approved yet the entry reads Publish, ⑤ Customize gallery – for hosts and admins only.

3. Choose Like (or Unlike to remove the like).

Why press-and-hold exists

iPhones and iPads have no right-click event. Without the long-press, the tile menu would be completely unreachable there – which is why both gestures trigger the same action.

The press is cancelled if you move your finger, zoom with a second finger, or let go too early. If nothing happens: hold still and wait a little longer.

What the tile menu really contains

Depending on what’s enabled and on your role, the menu holds: Select (or Deselect), Open, Like / Unlike, Comments, Share, Download and – on your own photos – Edit and Delete. Moderators and hosts also see Publish or Unpublish.

Report is not in the tile menu. You report a photo from the opened view – see Reporting content.

Way 3: Double-tap the opened photo

1. Open a photo by tapping the tile (slideshow / fullscreen).

2. Double-tap (or double-click) directly on the image. A heart animation plays exactly where you tap and the photo is liked.

Exactly what the double-tap does

The double-tap behaves differently depending on the state:

• Normal size, not yet liked → the photo is liked, animation at the tap point.
• Normal size, already liked → it just replays the animation, the like is not removed.
• Zoomed in → the double-tap resets the zoom instead of liking.

Two taps only count as a double-tap if they happen quickly (under 300 ms) and close together; a fast swipe won’t trigger a like. To remove a like, use the heart button in the bar or the context menu.

Way 4: Heart button in the slideshow bar

1. Open a photo and show the controls if needed (tap the image briefly).

   In fullscreen you'll find the control bar with the heart and comment buttons. ① the icon bar in the top right – on a computer with Like, Comments, Slideshow, the three-dot menu, Fullscreen and Close, on a phone only Slideshow, the menu and Close, ② Details reveals title, album and capture data, ③ the arrow to the next photo – on a phone you can swipe instead. Like and Comments sit next to Details at the bottom on a phone.

2. Tap the heart in the control bar. On a computer it’s in the top bar, on a phone in the bottom bar. The current like count sits next to it.

3. Tapping again removes the like – unlike the double-tap, you can unlike here.

Way 5: Bulk like for a whole selection

To give several photos a heart at once, use selection mode.

In selection mode you tick as many photos as you like; the highlighted Like button in the action bar hearts all of them at once.

1. Enter selection mode and mark the photos you want. How that works is covered under Selecting multiple photos.

2. Tap Like in the selection bar at the top. Every marked photo gets a heart in one go.

3. Selection mode then closes automatically and the selection is cleared.

Note

The Like button in the selection bar only appears when liking is enabled for this event. The bulk like sets likes – it is not a toggle, so it never removes existing likes.

Removing a like

Remove a like with the heart icon on the tile, the heart button in the slideshow, or via the tile’s context menu → Unlike. Only the double-tap can’t remove a like (it just replays the animation).

Who liked it?

For comments you can see who liked them: tap the like count under a comment – this opens the Comment Likes list with names and avatars. From there you can also open the relevant profile.

Sorting by likes and comments

Above the gallery sits the Sort by bar. Next to Upload and Capture you’ll find:

In the sort bar above the photos, Likes reorders the gallery by popularity. The option only appears when the host has enabled likes.

• Likes – only appears when likes are enabled for this event.
• Comments – only appears when comments are enabled for this event.

The arrow button beside it flips the order: for the engagement sorts it switches between Most and Least.

Note

If one of the two sort options is missing, the matching feature isn’t enabled for this event – sorting by something that doesn’t exist would be pointless. See Settings → Features.

Commenting

Opening comments

There are three ways to open the comment dialog:

1. From the tile: tap the speech-bubble icon. Important: it only appears once a tile has at least one comment. On an as-yet uncommented tile you won’t see a speech bubble – open the photo to write the first comment.

2. In the opened photo: tap the comment button in the control bar. This is always available (even with zero comments), as long as comments are on.

3. Via the tile’s context menu: right-click on a computer or press and hold on a phone, then choose the Comments entry.

Writing a comment

1 The emoji bar above the field inserts quick reactions, 2 the Post button publishes the comment – it stays greyed out while the field is empty.

1. Tap the input box at the bottom with the placeholder “Write a comment …”.

2. Use the emoji quick bar above the field if you like: a scrollable row of popular emojis. A tap inserts the emoji at the cursor position.

3. Send the comment with the Post button (paper-plane icon) or with the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Enter (on a Mac Cmd + Enter). Enter on its own just adds a line break.

Comment limits

• A comment can be at most 2000 characters; a counter appears from 1800 characters and turns red at 2000.
• The text field grows automatically from one up to three lines.
• An empty comment (or only spaces) can’t be sent – the Post button stays inactive.
• If sending fails, your text is kept so you can try again.

Editing or deleting your own comment

The ⋮ menu on your comment gives you these options:

• View Profile – opens the author’s profile (if available).
• Edit – only on your own comments. Change the text and tap Save. Edited comments carry a “• edited” note.
• Delete – with a confirmation prompt (“Are you sure you want to delete this comment?” / “This action cannot be undone.”).

Your own comment is marked with “• You”.

New comments appear automatically

The comment area updates live: comments from other guests appear automatically without you having to reload.

Liking comments

Every comment has its own heart on the right. Tap it to like the comment or remove your like. The number below shows the like count (large numbers are abbreviated as 1k/1M) and is tappable – it opens the Comment Likes list (see “Who liked it?” above).

Note

Comment likes are independent of the photo-like feature: even if liking photos is off, you can still like comments.

Replies & mentions

Replying to a comment

1. Tap Reply under a comment.

2. A reply banner appears above the input field (“Replying to comment”) with an X to cancel. The name of the person you’re replying to is pre-filled automatically as an @ mention, and the placeholder changes to “Write a reply …”.

3. Write your reply and send it like a normal comment.

Show existing replies with “View replies”; if there are many, load more with “Load more replies”.

Replies are one level deep

There is exactly one reply level. Replying to a reply attaches it to the same conversation thread – no nested sub-threads are created.

Mentioning someone (@ mention)

As soon as you type an @, the highlighted Suggestions list opens. Pick a name – the person you mention gets a notification.

1. Type an @ in the input field. A suggestion list opens, headed “Suggestions”.

2. Keep typing the name to filter. Up to eight suggestions are shown. If no one matches, it says “No users found”.

3. Pick the person by tapping – or, on a computer, with arrow up/down and Enter; Escape closes the list. Valid mentions appear blue and bold in the field.

In the published comment the mention is a clickable link to the profile. The mentioned person is also notified.

Example: one conversation thread

Max comments under the dance photo: “Who actually took this?” You tap Reply below it: the banner “Reply to comment” appears above the field and @Max is already filled in. You write “@Max that was Lena – ” type @, pick Lena from the suggestion list (she turns blue and bold) and send. Your reply now sits in Max’s thread, and Lena gets a notification.

Good to know

• Your likes and comments are visible to the other guests too – together you build a shared album of memories.
• Likes and comments count towards points & achievements.
• Comment details such as likes and views also show in the Image Details dialog (⋮ menu in fullscreen → Details).

Troubleshooting

• No heart on the tiles or in the photo → liking isn’t enabled by the host (OFF by default) or the tile icons are hidden.
• No speech-bubble icon on a tile → the tile has no comments yet (the icon only appears from the first one). Open the photo to comment.
• Press-and-hold doesn’t open a menu → your finger slipped, a second finger was on the screen, or you let go too early. Hold still and wait a little longer.
• No input box, only “Only contributors can comment” → your role isn’t high enough (view-only). See Roles & permissions.
• “You are banned from commenting” → a moderator has banned you; contact the event host.
• Double-tap doesn’t like → either the image is zoomed in (it resets the zoom) or already liked (just animation). Use the heart button or the context menu to remove.
• No “Likes” in the sort bar → liking isn’t enabled for this event.
• Comment won’t send → field empty/only spaces, or over 2000 characters.
• @ suggestions empty → “No users found”; word it differently or type the name in full.
• “Failed to load comments/replies” → network issue; tap “Retry”.

For moderators & hosts

Moderators and admins can edit or delete any comment via the ⋮ menu on each comment, and ban users. Reach the moderation / admin area via the profile menu in the top-right corner. More under Moderation and Ban users.
