Banning & restricting users
If a single person misbehaves, you don’t have to throttle the whole event. Instead of turning on approval for everyone, you can restrict one person in a targeted way – and decide exactly what stays allowed. There are four independent ban categories; each can be set individually and lifted individually.
This guide covers both places where bans live: where you set a ban (in the user detail dialog) and where you get an overview of everyone who is banned (the Banned Users tab on the moderation page).
The four ban categories
Section titled “The four ban categories”For each person you decide independently what to block:
| Category | What happens |
|---|---|
| Uploads | The person can no longer upload photos or videos. |
| Comments | The person can no longer post comments or replies. |
| Nickname changes | The person can no longer change their nickname. |
| Profile pictures | The person can no longer upload a new profile picture. |
The categories combine freely. You can block only comments and keep uploads allowed – or set several categories at once (a bulk ban). For every ban you can optionally add a reason.
Path A — Setting a ban (via Registered Users)
Section titled “Path A — Setting a ban (via Registered Users)”You set bans not in the Banned Users tab, but in a person’s detail dialog. The fastest way to reach it is through the list of registered users.
-
Open your event’s admin area (profile menu top right → Manage event / Admin portal).

The profile menu top right takes you into the admin and moderation area. -
In the sidebar, click Registered Users. The page title at the top reads “Registered Users”.

The registered users list is the entry point for banning an individual person. -
Find the person via the Search by name or email field. The Role filter, the Registered checkbox and the sort order help too. If needed, switch between card and table view.
You can spot already-banned people right on the card: compact Upload Ban or Comment Ban badges appear next to the name. (Nickname and profile-picture bans are not shown as badges on the card – you’ll see those inside the dialog.)
-
Click the user card (not the right-click menu – that only offers “View details” and “Copy email”, no ban action). The person’s detail dialog opens.
-
Scroll down in the dialog to the collapsible Moderation section (shield icon; a small badge shows the number of active bans) and expand it.
-
Click Ban User (red button with a no-entry icon). The ban dialog opens.
-
In the dialog, select one or more ban categories (each appears as a card with a checkbox, icon, label and short description). Optionally enter a reason.
-
Click Confirm Ban. The ban takes effect immediately – a confirmation toast (“… has been banned”) appears.
The moderation section in the detail dialog
Section titled “The moderation section in the detail dialog”Once expanded, the moderation section shows – depending on the person’s state – these elements:
- Ban User (red, no-entry icon) – appears only while at least one category is still free.
- Unban User (green, check icon) – appears only when active bans already exist.
- Remove Profile Picture (blue, photo icon) – appears only when the person currently has a profile picture.
- Status box: With active bans, a red box Currently banned from: with a colored chip per category. If all four categories are free, a green box reads No bans active – user has full access instead.
The ban dialog field by field
Section titled “The ban dialog field by field”The ban dialog is titled Ban User with the subtitle “Select what … should be banned from” (with the person’s name).
- Select ban categories: Only the categories that are not yet banned are shown. Each is a clickable card with a checkbox – multiple selection is allowed (a bulk ban). An already-banned category no longer appears here.
- Reason (optional): free-text field, up to 500 characters. The help text below reads “Provide a reason for this ban (visible to other moderators)”. The reason is visible to your team and later appears in the Banned Users tab as “Reason for upload ban”, etc.
- Confirm Ban: red, disabled while no category is selected. One click writes all selected categories in a single operation; the reason applies to every category chosen in this step.
- Cancel: closes the dialog without changes.
Path B — Overview of everyone banned & unbanning
Section titled “Path B — Overview of everyone banned & unbanning”The Banned Users tab is the overview of every ban in the event. It lives on the moderation page – not in “Registered Users”.
-
Open the moderation page (profile menu top right → Moderation, or from within the admin area).
-
Switch to the Banned Users tab.

The Banned Users tab shows every ban at a glance – filtered by category. -
Filter as needed via the sub-tabs: All, Uploads, Comments, Nickname, Profile Picture (each with a counter badge). Use the Search users… field to find a specific person.
-
Each card shows an avatar/initial, the (clickable) name, colored ban badges – Upload Ban (red), Comment Ban (orange), Nickname Ban (purple), Profile Picture Ban (blue) – and below them the reasons stored per category.
-
Click Manage on the person. This opens their profile / the moderation section.
-
There, click Unban User, choose the categories to lift in the unban dialog, and confirm with Confirm Unban.
If nobody is banned, the tab shows the empty state No banned users with a note that all people are in good standing.
The unban dialog
Section titled “The unban dialog”Titled Unban User, green check icon. Only the person’s active bans are shown as cards. You can select individual ones – partial unbanning is possible (e.g. lift the upload ban but keep the comment ban). Confirm Unban takes effect immediately; a confirmation toast appears.
FAQ & troubleshooting
Section titled “FAQ & troubleshooting”- I don’t see the moderation section or the ban button. You lack the rights, or the person ranks equal to / above you. Only owner/admins/moderators with moderation rights see the section, and nobody can ban equal or higher roles.
- “Ban User” is missing even though the person is open. Then all four categories are already banned – only Unban User remains.
- I can’t find the Banned Users tab. It lives on the moderation page (
/moderation), not in “Registered Users”. - A banned guest still uploads. Bans apply per person in the event. If someone creates a brand-new anonymous guest account, that bypasses the ban. For widespread problems, event-wide measures (approval requirement, access codes) work better – see Moderation and Privacy & moderation.
- Error “Action failed. Please try again.” Usually a brief network or permission hiccup – just try again.
